ISTQB® Certified Tester Foundation Level 4.0 (CTFL) is the starting point and prerequisite for all other
ISTQB® Foundation and Advanced level exams in the Core, Agile and Specialist stream.
ISTQB® Agile Foundation is a prerequisite for the ISTQB® Agile Advanced Levels.
Each syllabus includes defined Learning Objectives which are statements that describe what the candidate is expected to know or be able to do in respect to the syllabus content. Each Learning Objective (and exam question) is classified according to a cognitive level, these cognitive levels are known as K-Levels.

  • • Foundation level exams cover 3 different K-levels (K1 to K3)
  • • Advanced level exams cover 3 different K-Levels (K2 to K4)
  • • Expert level exams cover 5 different K-Levels (K2 to K6)

Each syllabus will also typically include Business Outcomes which are statements of what can be expected from a person who achieves certification in a particular subject area. This is useful as a benchmark for employers and recruiters. ISTQB Foundation Levels

1. ISTQB® Certified Tester Foundation Level 4.0 (CTFL) Certification

Note: CTFL 4.0 is the latest released version of the ISTQB® Certified Tester Foundation Level certification. Anyone who has been studying for CTFL v3.1 can find information at the link until the sunset dates (9th May 2024 for English, 9th November 2024 for non-English).ISTQB® Foundation Level is relevant across software delivery practices including Waterfall, Agile, DevOps and Continuous Delivery.
The 2023 syllabus covers six sections:The Fundamentals of Software Testing, Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle, Static Testing, Test Analysis and Design, Managing the test Activities, and Test Tools.

Who can do this exam?

The Foundation Level qualification is suitable for anyone who needs to demonstrate practical knowledge of the fundamental concepts of software testing including people in roles such as testers, test analysts, test engineers, test consultants, test managers, user acceptance testers and software developers. Additionally, it is also appropriate for individuals who need a basic understanding of software testing including project managers, quality managers, software development managers, business analysts, IT directors and management consultants.

2. ISTQB® Agile Certifications

A tester on an Agile project will work differently than one working on a traditional project. Testers must understand the values and principles that underpin Agile projects, and how testers are an integral part of a whole-team approach together with developers and business representatives.

The ISTQB® Agile stream covers testing practices specifically for the Agile methodology and includes the following certifications, exams for all are available from iSQI:

● Certified Tester Foundation Level- Agile Tester (CTFL-AT)

● Certified Tester Advanced Level – Agile Technical Tester (CTAL-ATT)

● Certified Tester Advanced Level - Agile Test Leadership at Scale (CTAL-ATLaS) - this certification is currently in development (exam to follow). Chapter 1 “Quality Assistance” has been launched.

3. ISTQB® Core Advanced Level Certifications

The ISTQB® Core Advanced Level certifications support career progression for testing professionals. To achieve Advanced Level certification, candidates must hold the Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) certificate (and have sufficient practical experience as may be defined).
Core Advanced Level includes three Syllabi: Test Manager, Test Analyst and Technical Test Analyst.
The Core Advanced Level qualifications are suitable for people who want to establish their careers further in software testing, such as testers, test analysts, test engineers, test consultants, test managers, user acceptance testers and software developers. This Level is also suitable for anyone who is not a software tester but wants a deeper understanding of software testing, such as project managers, quality managers, software development managers, business analysts, IT directors and management consultants.

4. ISTQB® Core Expert Level Certifications

The ISTQB® Expert Level is designed for professional software testers or managers who are highly experienced in the discipline. This Level provides in-depth, practically-oriented certifications in a range of different testing subjects. To obtain Expert Level certification, potential candidates must have:

  • ● The Foundation Certificate
  • ● An Advanced Certificate depending on the Expert Module desired
  • ● Passed the Expert Level Exam
  • ● At least 5 years of practical testing experience
  • ● At least 2 years of industry experience in the specific Expert Level topic

There are two Expert Level certifications: Test Management (CTEL-TM) & the Testing Process (CTEL- ITP). Both are available from iSQI. Each certification consists of modules; there is an exam for each module.
